Happy Valentines! It’s Happening Again

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on February 15, 2017 by rlarryeFebruary 15, 2017

Hispanics often celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day as a Day of Love and Friendship. How ironic is the February 14, 2017 Charlotte Observer headline. A former supporter of George W. Bush’s compassionate conservatism, Larry knows that a nation of laws must be a nation of compassionate law.

Serenity Prayer and Kingdom of God

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on February 13, 2017 by rlarryeFebruary 13, 2017

Larry was once taught that the institutional church and the kingdom of God were the same. Experience, however, has taught him differently. Larry grew up during racial segregation. Being a church leader involved in Hispanic outreach has resurfaced old questions about social responsibility.

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on February 9, 2017 by rlarryeFebruary 9, 2017

No doubt, you have experienced that moment of TV or movie suspense when the camera angle leaves the potential victim vulnerable to some unseen threat lingering just off-screen. Yet the music and framing make clear that you should be afraid. … Continue reading →

Donald Trump and Andrew Jackson

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on February 8, 2017 by rlarryeFebruary 8, 2017

A portrait of Andrew Jackson now keeps a watchful eye in the Oval Office, often appearing over President Trump’s left shoulder. White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon likes to cast the president as Jacksonian.

Jackson, well-known for his forcible removal of large numbers of American residents, made no secret of his belief in white supremacy.

I’m Just So Wonderful – Now Let Us Pray!

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on February 3, 2017 by rlarryeFebruary 3, 2017

Donald Trump is not particularly known as a man of prayer.

While his well-crafted speech sought to emphasize the spiritual over the material, his obsession with his own successes was again on display, .

WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on February 1, 2017 by rlarryeFebruary 1, 2017

There is a reason the novel is popular after 68 years.  George Orwell’s study of the art of lying for political profit  is finding modern-day relevance.

The 1949 novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four has once again become a best-seller, with additional printings ordered.

George Orwell invented words such as Doublethink and Newspeak. Like Winston Smith (the propagandist working for The Ministry of Truth), spokesman Sean Spicer has specialized in turning falsehoods into truth.

Larry recalls an interview between MSNBC Craig Melvin and Sean Spicer in 2016.

A Dark Suit for a Dark Mission

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on January 26, 2017 by rlarryeJanuary 26, 2017

President Trump has reportedly criticized his Press Secretary for not wearing a dark suit. This may be the least of Sean Spicer’s challenges.

To be the spokesman for an administration at war with the very press corps that he must face daily will undoubtedly prove daunting.

Legitimate? Or Just Legal?

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on January 24, 2017 by rlarryeJanuary 24, 2017

Illegitimate means “not authorized by the law; not in accordance with accepted standards or rules. Example: “an illegitimate exercise of power.”

Legality and Legitimacy are not always the same thing, Larry explains in this analysis of the Trump campaign and of the first four full days of the Trump presidency.

Secretary of the Department of OOPS!

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on December 13, 2016 by rlarryeDecember 13, 2016

Larry has followed with interest and empathy the political challenges of former Texas Governor Rick Perry.

The irony of his appointment as Secretary of the Department of Energy gives Christians an opportunity for a reflective pause.

God’s Creative Expression of Giftedness

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on August 9, 2018 by rlarryeJune 8, 2021

In 8/15/06, in a now inactive blog, I wrote the following reflection: A little piece of something, clearly visible in the ultrasound image. With amazement I peer into my computer monitor until I see it. It’s my first grandchild, nine months … Continue reading →

A “Real Republican” and the Party of “No!”

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on December 1, 2016 by rlarryeDecember 1, 2016

This is a “repost” of a blog originally posted in 2010. A registered Republican for over 30 years, Larry (now unaffiliated) still wonders about the future of the GOP.

The Ghost of Republican Present!

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on November 29, 2016 by rlarryeNovember 29, 2016

During the Obama years, Republicans have been haunted by Generic Republican — that nameless, faceless candidate who always out-performs the Democratic candidate with a name and face.

Moreover, Generic Republican also out-polled other Republican primary candidates!

Larry believes that the concept of Generic Republican has special significance in the last presidential election.

¿Cómo se dice segura? Some Post-Electoral Reflections

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on November 11, 2016 by rlarryeNovember 11, 2016

The 2016 presidential election results were not only surprising, but seemed to defy logic.

Larry Eppley is a 68 year old white male — raised Republican and an evangelical Christian. 80% of his demographic voted for Donald Trump.

In this post-election reflection, Larry tries to understand the apparent willingness of white Christian evangelicals to ignore obvious signs of racism and xenophobia, with little regard to the destructive impact to our immigrant communities.

The Ones We Don’t See…

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on July 24, 2014 by rlarryeJuly 24, 2014

The sight of unaccompanied children waiting just inside the border for the border patrol is, to say the least, surreal. We view this wave of migrants, at best, as a humanitarian crisis– and at worst, as an invasion of disease carrying third-world latinos. … Continue reading →

An Act of Love!

YouDidntAsk.org Posted on April 9, 2014 by rlarryeApril 9, 2014

Jeb Bush shook the political landscape in April, 2014 when he drew a distinction between illegal immigration and serious crimes (misdemeanor versus felony). The way I look at this is someone who comes to our country because they couldn’t come … Continue reading →
