{"id":1456,"date":"2010-10-06T14:30:08","date_gmt":"2010-10-06T18:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/?p=1456"},"modified":"2010-10-06T14:30:08","modified_gmt":"2010-10-06T18:30:08","slug":"the-pope-and-invitro-feritilization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/2010\/10\/06\/the-pope-and-invitro-feritilization\/","title":{"rendered":"The Vatican, Pro-Life and Invitro Feritilization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/w-nobel-edwards-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1459\" title=\"w-nobel-edwards\" src=\"https:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/w-nobel-edwards-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a>On October 4,\u00a0 Robert Edwards, the pioneer of<em> in vitro fertilization<\/em> received the Nobel Prize for medicine.\u00a0 This medically assisted reproductive procedure accounts for <a href=\"http:\/\/parenting.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/10\/04\/i-v-f-takes-the-nobel-prize\/?scp=2&amp;sq=ivf&amp;st=cse\">over 4 million births<\/a> in the last 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Vatican criticized the choice of the British researcher as &#8220;completely out of place.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church reproductive rights are not available to faithful Catholics.\u00a0 This normally expresses itself in the condemnation of\u00a0 Pro-Choice legislation which allows for the possibility of abortion.\u00a0 While many non-Catholic Christians have personal ethical misgivings about abortion, they do not necessarily accept the views of the Roman Catholic Church regarding contraception or in vitro fertilization.<\/p>\n<p>For many couples, in vitro fertilization has provided the opportunity for pregnancy and childbirth, when otherwise impossible.<\/p>\n<p>It is ironic then, that the Catholic Church, which prides itself in its &#8220;pro-life&#8221; stance does not celebrate the right to conceive and bear children with medical assistance. Its prohibition of in vitro fertilization is based on the same tenant that forbids contraception &#8212; that every sexual expression between husband and wife must be open to procreation, and that procreation with medical assistance is &#8220;unnatural&#8221; and therefore immoral.<\/p>\n<p>While it is not the intent of this post to advocate for abortion, there is a question that begs to be answered:\u00a0 Which of the various views regarding the prohibition of conception, medically assisted fertilization, and abortion should be forced upon the country by federal legislation?<\/p>\n<p>Even among those who are conflicted by the use of abortion as birth control, there is not unanimity of thought concerning when a human life actually exists.<\/p>\n<p>It seems clear that our federal laws must of necessity allow the element of choice thus providing space for individuals to practice their personal religious convictions as they see fit.\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On October 4,\u00a0 Robert Edwards, the pioneer of in vitro fertilization received the Nobel Prize for medicine.\u00a0 This medically assisted reproductive procedure accounts for over 4 million births in the last 30 years.
