{"id":1955,"date":"2011-10-19T15:13:30","date_gmt":"2011-10-19T19:13:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/?p=1955"},"modified":"2011-10-19T15:13:30","modified_gmt":"2011-10-19T19:13:30","slug":"romneys-lawn-care-prediciment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/2011\/10\/19\/romneys-lawn-care-prediciment\/","title":{"rendered":"Romney&#8217;s Lawn-care Prediciment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1962\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/romney-perry-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1962\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1962\" title=\"romney-perry\" src=\"https:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/romney-perry-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I&#8217;m running for office, for Pete&#8217;s sake.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Four years ago it was a contentious discussion between Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney that signaled the new Republican position on immigration reform.<\/p>\n<p>It seems that a lawn-care service hired by Romney had used undocumented workers.\u00a0 According to Romney, he later\u00a0 changed companies, explaining &#8220;I&#8217;m running for office, for Pete&#8217;s sake, I can&#8217;t have illegals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The message to the Republican faithful&#8211;no pathway to citizenship for the undocumented.\u00a0 The message to the Latino voters nationwide&#8211;you and your kind are not welcome here.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward four years!\u00a0 Texas Governor Rick Perry pushes back when attacked for his Texas Dream Act, by recalling the lawn-care incident from the previous primary.\u00a0 Especially noticeable in this argument was the constant use of the expression &#8220;illegal immigrant&#8221;. This expression has become a code word for Republicans. It panders to the &#8220;they don&#8217;t belong here&#8221; sentiment that many anglo-american people feel toward Latinos, documented or not.<\/p>\n<p>It is an extension of the &#8220;This is America&#8211;We speak English here&#8221; reaction to anyone who speaks Spanish.\u00a0 It fuels the legislative attempts to &#8220;officially&#8221; establish English as the country&#8217;s language.\u00a0 In short it is a part of a rejection of all things Hispanic, including the people.<\/p>\n<p>Rick Perry is in serious trouble politically, we are told.\u00a0 His crime: he supported the right of undocumented youth to be educated beyond high-school, without paying onerous tuition increases.\u00a0 He wanted to assist these young Hispanics as they moved toward citizenship.\u00a0 Among the Republican faithful, this is the ultimate heresy.<\/p>\n<p>The current Republican approach is to make life as difficult as possible for innocent children of the undocumented who call the USA home.\u00a0 With little regard for the rising &#8220;second-generation&#8221; the Republican candidates focus their attention on the big wall between Mexico and this country&#8211;how long, how high, and if it should be electrified.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1960s the Republican Party adopted a &#8220;southern strategy&#8221; which pandered to the white supremacists in order to win southern votes, and in the process alienated the African-American\u00a0 voter.\u00a0 In this decade the Republicans seem determined to use a similar strategy against our Hispanic families.\u00a0 Such a strategy is indicative of the value this political party places upon a particular ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p>I have found our country&#8217;s Hispanics to be warm, hospitable and hard working people.\u00a0 They also have long memories.\u00a0 The Republicans will live with the results of this insensitivity for many years.\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four years ago it was a contentious discussion between Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney that signaled the new Republican position on immigration reform.
