{"id":2114,"date":"2011-12-07T18:14:06","date_gmt":"2011-12-07T23:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/?p=2114"},"modified":"2011-12-07T18:14:06","modified_gmt":"2011-12-07T23:14:06","slug":"bofa-ad-invokes-dark-pearl-harbor-memories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/2011\/12\/07\/bofa-ad-invokes-dark-pearl-harbor-memories\/","title":{"rendered":"BofA Ad Invokes Dark &#8220;Pearl Harbor Memories&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/uwajimaya-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2130 alignright\" title=\"uwajimaya\" src=\"https:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/uwajimaya-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a>December 7 is a day of special memory, as we reflect upon those lost in an unprovoked act of war against the United States.<\/p>\n<p>However this country&#8217;s action taken against lawful and loyal citizens suggests another &#8220;day of infamy&#8217; yet in the collective memory of the United States.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Tomio Moriguchi, Chairman of the board at Uwajimay, <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"> one of the largest Asian grocers in the Pacific Northwest<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/ahead.bankofamerica.com\/local\/supporting-a-cultural-and-culinary-institution-in-seattle\/\">TV ad<\/a> co-incidentally scheduled to run in early December features a Japanese family who was able to get a loan to restart their lives and begin a small business.\u00a0 The (original) Bank of America of the 1940&#8217;s, operating on the west coast, apparently saw fit to make a small business loan to a worthy family returning.<\/p>\n<p>Showing no malice, the family shared how they were able to make a fresh start, and become quite successful with their business.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So in 1928 [my father] opened the store in Tacoma making fish cakes, selling them from the back of his truck to farmers around Washington State. And in 1942 of course they were sent away.<\/p>\n<p>Japanese Americans lost their business. They lost everything. When the war ended, my father came back to Seattle and then restarted the Uwajimaya business.<\/p>\n<p>In 1945 when my family opened the store, of course they needed some money and Bank of America was the only bank who would talk to my father.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Undoubtedly &#8220;sent away&#8221; referenced the detention facility which American citizens \/ residents of Japanese ancestry were forced to occupy until the end of World War Two.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/message.bankofamerica.com\/heritage\/#\/merger-history\">current<\/a> Bank of America, headquartered in my home city of Charlotte, NC, is an east coast affair, basically a North Carolina bank which grew phenomenally as North Carolina National Bank, then NationsBank until the 1990&#8217;s when it merged with the west coast conglomerate BankAmerica.<\/p>\n<p>However the west coast bank was originally named Bank of Italy and later in the 1920&#8217;s, Bank of America, having been started by an Italian immigrant to serve the growing immigrant populations.\u00a0 Its decision to lend to the Uwajimaya&#8217;s small business was consistent with its history.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the current Bank of America operates under the original charter of the<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bank_of_Italy_%28USA%29\"> Bank of italy.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Related Post:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/immigration\/mexican-repatriation\/\"> I backed into this one&#8230;<\/a>\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>December 7 is a day of special memory, as we reflect upon those lost in an unprovoked act of war against the United States.
