{"id":2287,"date":"2017-02-21T17:01:44","date_gmt":"2017-02-21T22:01:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/?p=2287"},"modified":"2017-02-21T17:01:44","modified_gmt":"2017-02-21T22:01:44","slug":"a-recurring-nightmare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/2017\/02\/21\/a-recurring-nightmare\/","title":{"rendered":"A Recurring Nightmare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note: This article, written in 2012, seems perpetually relevant.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For years now I have been writing about the increasing negative sentiment directed at our Latino residents.\u00a0 We can say what we will about immigration law, but that doesn&#8217;t do much to free me from a haunting fear that I cannot dispel.<\/p>\n<p>With every immigration effort\u00a0targeting Hispanic immigrants, I feel it a little more.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like a noose slowly tightening. <!--more--><\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">My nightmare is simply that of uniformed officials searching house after house with the assistance of co-operative neighbors, as people of &#8220;a lesser status&#8221; are summarily removed from their homes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yes I know this sounds gestapo-like, but my haunting vision derives from the speech which an aging holocaust victim gave\u00a0some years ago. \u00a0He vividly described his childhood memory of <em>the pointing fingers of his non-Jewish neighbors, many of them Christians<\/em>, directing the Nazi troops to his home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Now please understand.\u00a0<\/em> I know that we are not setting up gas chambers and crematoriums, so that is not my point of comparison.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I am more focused on the <em>motives and hearts of those neighbors<\/em>.\u00a0 For I doubt that many of them knew <em>the ultimate fate awaiting<\/em> those whom they were singling out for removal. <em>And after all, they were just obeying the law &#8212; a law that considered a certain people unfit to continue their residency, regardless of how long they had lived in that area.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Over 1 million immigrants were\u00a0deported during the first Obama years, according to a March, 2012\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/03\/01\/deportation-numbers-obama_n_1314916.html\">article<\/a> in the Huffington Post Latino Politics online magazine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yet, many were\u00a0not satisfied with up to 400,000 removals a year, and dispute the validity of this grand &#8220;accomplishment.&#8221;\u00a0 They are pressing for a reverse migration which would rid our land of some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/issues-research\/immig\/a-quick-look-at-u.s.-immigrants-demographics-wor.aspx\">9+ million undocumented immigrants<\/a>, along with those family members, often minors with US citizenship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/8301-503544_162-57364444-503544\/romney-on-immigration-im-for-self-deportation\/\"> President Romney<\/a> would have willingly removed these by basically starving them out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>Romney said &#8220;we&#8217;re not going to round people up&#8221; but rather, financially struggling undocumented immigrants would choose to return to their home countries of their own volition. &#8220;The answer is self-deportation, which is people decide they can do better by going home because they can&#8217;t find work here because they don&#8217;t have legal documentation to allow them to work here,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And so we&#8217;re not going to round people up.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But there&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/2012.republican-candidates.org\/Romney\/Immigration.php\">more<\/a> &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Governor Romney believes more state and local authorities should work with the federal government to enforce immigration laws. This builds off of his experience in Massachusetts where he deputized the State Police to work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and enforce federal immigration laws &#8230; Governor Romney will provide additional resources to enforce existing immigration laws throughout the nation. We cannot be serious about our immigration laws until we provide the resources needed to enforce them. &#8220;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>CBS News:\u00a0Romney on immigration: I&#8217;m for &#8220;self-deportation&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This takes no account of the economic impact of suddenly losing millions of people, that hidden workforce that helps support a good economy, not to mention any humanitarian issues resulting.<\/p>\n<p>So what of those who still find enough work to support their USAmerican citizen children who know no other homeland?\u00a0 Is it house by house search and removal then? \u00a0Thus, my recurring nightmare.
