They do it ‘for love’. And I said, say it again. I didn’t get — that’s one I’ve never heard of before. I’ve heard money, I’ve heard this, I’ve heard sex, I’ve heard everything! The one thing I never heard of was love. I understand what he’s saying, but, you know, it’s out there, I’ll tell you.

It comes as no surprise that Trump’s like-minded audience booed at the mere mention of Jeb Bush. To these Republicans, undocumented immigrants are not fellow citizens of humanity seeking opportunity for their families. They are “illegals” — the mysterious others whom these Republicans are unwilling or unable to view in human terms.

So with a willful, dismissive ignorance they show their disdain for the millions of residents who not only are intrinsic to our economy, but were they all to leave, our economy would suffer severely. However, Bush remains firm:

This past weekend, I made some statements about immigration reform [that] generated a little more news than I anticipated. You know, I’ve been saying this for the last three or four years, I said the exact same thing that I’ve said regularly.

Bush does not make these statements in order to walk them back. He clearly intends to champion a point of view sorely missing in Republican circles. While he is willing to compromise on the issue of “path to citizenship”, he clearly wants legalization in order to stop the deportation that is devastating so many families.

The simple fact is, there is no conflict between enforcing our laws, believing in the rule of law and having some sensitivity to the immigrant experience, which is part of who we are as a country.

Among Tea Party Conservatives Jeb Bush deserves “boos” and Donald Trump is worthy of a standing ovation. Jeb Bush has clearly thrown down the gauntlet before his unappreciative party.

“It’s not an American value to allow people to stay in the shadows.”

The decision to speak his heart about immigration reform was more than a testing of the waters for a possible Jeb Bush presidential candidacy.
