{"id":3550,"date":"2016-12-13T19:51:25","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T00:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/?p=3550"},"modified":"2016-12-13T19:51:25","modified_gmt":"2016-12-14T00:51:25","slug":"secretary-of-the-department-of-oops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/youdidntask.org\/blog\/2016\/12\/13\/secretary-of-the-department-of-oops\/","title":{"rendered":"Secretary of the Department of OOPS!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I thought it was fake news, and checked several sites that I trusted.<\/p>\n<p>Texas Governor Rick Perry had ended his ill-fated presidential campaign with his bold announcement that there were three departments (along with their three cabinet heads) that he would abolish\u00a0&#8212; Commerce, \u00a0Education and &#8230;and &#8230;.OOPS!<\/p>\n<p>Governor Perry tried to recover in the 2011 debate by announcing that the <em>Department of Energy<\/em> was what he had momentarily forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re told that it was Perry&#8217;s recent back surgery and effort to not rely too much on his pain medication\u00a0that caused this campaign ending gaffe. At any rate, he really wanted to abolish\u00a0the Department of Energy. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rick Perry, Southern Christian White Evangelical Republican that he is, seems to think that climate-change concerns are not \u00a0valid, and should not influence energy policy.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe science is not settled on this.\u00a0 The idea that we would put Americans\u2019 economy at jeopardy based on scientific theory that\u2019s not settled yet to me is just nonsense&#8230;\u201cJust because you have a group of scientists who stood up and said here is the fact. Galileo got outvoted for a spell\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Galileo indeed!<\/em> \u00a0That 17<sup>th<\/sup> century\u00a0scientist who believed that the sun was stationary, with the earth and other planets orbiting. \u00a0The early astronomer whose findings put him at odds with the Catholic Church who insisted that this &#8220;father of modern physics&#8221; was advocating heretical teachings in opposition to Holy Scripture. Galileo who was officially condemned by the Pope and sentenced to house arrest for the rest of his life. (The Catholic Church <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/10\/31\/world\/after-350-years-vatican-says-galileo-was-right-it-moves.html\">officially apologized <\/a>in 1992.)<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The history regarding Galileo should give Governor Perry a reason to pause and reflect. Does he really want to align himself with those of today&#8217;s religious right who\u00a0believe that concern about possible human effect on environment violates Scripture?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Apparently so, if one considers the views of Oklahoma Senator and longtime supporter James Inhofe:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Well actually the Genesis 8:22 that I use &#8230;\u00a0is that \u2018as long as the earth remains there will be seed time and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, day and night,\u2019 my point is, God\u2019s still up there.
