\t\t\t\t\"\"I teach a bilingual Bible class.\u00a0 Although I benefit from a translator, I actually have learned to speak and read Spanish.\u00a0 Recently I made an interesting discovery.\u00a0 In a Spanish Bible the word justicia<\/strong><\/em> appears often.\u00a0 It’s a favorite word of the Old Testament prophets, as well as Jesus.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, in the English translations the word justice <\/strong><\/em>seldom appears in the corresponding biblical passages.\u00a0 Instead, in our English Bibles, we generally see a word like righteousness. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em>In our English culture, we ascribe the concept of justice to the realm of law.\u00a0 Only when we affix the word social <\/em>to our word justice<\/em> do we approach the concept so familiar to Jesus and the Jewish Prophets before him.<\/p>\n

That’s not to say Jesus’ contemporaries did not have an emphasis on the legal aspect.\u00a0 Theocratic in nature, they would often begin their religious questions with “Is it legal.”\u00a0 Jesus’ approach was much less legal.\u00a0 In fact he always appealed to a righteousness of the heart.<\/p>\n
