Is “Illegal Immigration” the Key to Republican Success?
Just vote yes! If you have already agreed to the bill, just vote yes!
That was the message from Rep Weiner, congressman from New York’s 9th District, to his colleagues.
This is unfair, responded the Republicans. You are forcing us to accept a straight up or down vote, and you know we are not going to do that. You know we want to add an important amendment, and you are afraid to let the American public see your true colors on “illegal immigration”.
So there. They got it in. They did it in the health care debate, and they did it again. The Republicans have determined to find some way to attach immigration to every issue.
Never mind that you are participating in a growing back-lash against Latinos — all Latinos. Never mind that you claim to want to move the legislation forward. Attach the immigration issue to any effort of the Democrats to do anything.
So Democratic Representative Weiner exploded.
Oh, by the way. The legislation under consideration was for health benefits for 9/11 first responders, some of whom are sick and dying. That is,of course, if anyone cares!
Well, at least the Republicans didn’t invoke charges of a “death panel”. No, as far as the sick 9/11 survivors are concerned, the Republicans were becoming one.
Listen as Congressman Weiner earlier explained a bit more about the “undocumented” responders in the video below:
