So What Just Happened?
After the “Republican Wave” of 2010, President Barak Obama explains:
Some election nights are more fun than others. Some are exhilarating. Some are humbling. Yesterday’s vote confirmed what I’ve heard from folks all across America. People are frustrated, they’re deeply frustrated with the pace of our economic recovery.
For me, that’s only partly correct. What I am the most frustrated about is the inability of polarized lawmakers to act as if the saving of our economy is worth a co-operative effort. I also believe that this stalemate is exactly what the Republicans wanted, and everything is going according to plan. While there is plenty of blame to go around, the bogus threat of death panels, the fallacious claim that the stimulus is causing our unemployment, the challenging of the President’s citizenship and Christian faith, etc. comes clearly from the right.
So in some ironic twist of fate, the Republican’s obstructionism and misinformation has been amply rewarded.
Meanwhile, the American Public is experiencing the ultimate betrayal of politicians who, if they had anything to offer during this economic downturn, have preferred to leave us languishing while they neutralized one another.
Ironically also is the fact that the Democrats have actually accomplished quite a bit, but thanks to Republican-Tea Party efforts, will never get the credit they deserve.
For me health care is a very real issue, and one that the Republicans would not take on — that is until the Dems started work on their bill. Is their Health Care Reform legislation perfect? Hardly. But at least they did something, which to the right is a crime against the nation.
So for now I will use my early Social Security benefit to pay for my health insurance.
How do we tell the Republicans that we are tired of party labels and slogans? How do we tell them that we don’t care who gets the credit — just CO-OPERATE!
According to the Washington Post,
(Republican Leader Senator Mitchell) McConnell told reporters that the election showed that “choosing the president over your constituents is not a good strategy,” and that voters “appreciated us saying no to the things the American people indicated they were not in favor of.”
Mitch McConnell doesn’t seem to get it. Republicans have exactly two years to learn to “play nice”, or another wave is coming!
